She's done it! She's discovered the hand-made forcefield to combat all the hostility against public breastfeeding. It's not that people are disgusted by the open display of motherhood. They're just pissed that that doughy little baby head is getting in the way of a sweet boob flash. This "Boobie Beanie," available on Etsy, allows moms to feed their babies in any location, while appeasing public breastfeeding critics who think breasts should be used less for infant sustenance and more for Spring Break wild-going.

@schnittjer: Good for you for being such a grownup. Some of us, though, don't sexualize breasts that are feeding babies.

I actually make these for breastfeeding mothers (including myself) I also live in a state that protects breastfeeding mothers. I personally would rather see a baby wearing this hat than a onesie that says "fuck-off" (which I have seen) I make these for ANY baby breastfed or not, to bring to awareness that we breastfeeding mothers should NOT be censored and should NOT be ashamed of our breasts. I am also a breast cancer supporter and some women lose their breast before they have the chance to breastfeed, and i am sure those women would LOVE to have their real breasts back and breastfeed their baby wearing this hat than to not be able to breastfeed. If you think this hat is not for you and your child than don't buy/make it. We are all protected under the law. (For a little background; When my oldest was a newborn I was breastfeeding him under a breastfeeding cloak, and some woman came up to me a said "You know you can go into the bathroom and do that." I of course didn't and said back "You go in there to eat your lunch and I will go in there to breastfeed my son." I was also a 17 yr old new mom who was doing the right thing and was embarassed to do it. Never again will I or someone else feel the way I did when that IGNORANT woman said those words to me!)

I'm all for breastfeeding too. This hat is totally ignorant though. Someone is just looking for negative attention. Maybe some of you should grow up and cover up. We don't care to see what you have. I breastfeed and what do you know, I didn't have people gawking, b/c I discreetly did it.

Kristi I see the sarcastic humour in the bloggers comment. Breast feeding Moms can rise to the occasion by continuing to focus on the wonderful, good, positive and necessary reasons for the amazing design of our human bodies and use our ability to reason.

Okay John, you are right and you are wrong. Here in the U.S. and quite a few other countries, what you're saying is true. In certain cultures around the world, they don't cover themselves for any other reason than to stay warm. So, on days that clothing isn't needed they don't wear any. in those place, breasts are not looked upon as sexual objects. Americans and other countries, have sexualized womens breasts to the point of no return. Oh, and I'm pretty sure that monkeys breasts stay the same. Not positive, maybe I'll look that up.

HAHAHAHA, THX FOR ALL THE COMMENTS. I WAS BREASTFED, I HAVE BREASTFED, BREASTFEEDING RUNS IN MY FAMILY.THE GAWKERS R AS IGNORANT AS R THE PEOPLE WHO R OFFENDED AS A MOTHER CARES FOR HER INFANT. IT IS NOT SOMETHING U JUST "WHIP OUT" AND DO. IT IS DONE AS DISCREETLY AS POSSIBLE. ALL OF U WHO R OFFENDED BY MY COMMENTS NEED TO GET OVER YRSELVES. THIS IS A FUNNY SARCASTIC PRODUCT FOR THOSE OF US WHO HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH THE IGNORANT MASSES. IT IS STILL A GREAT IDEA!

JLK | 02/07/2012 flag |
You are lumping everyone into a group of lusty gawkers. This kind of thinking makes breastfeeding in public "on the edge" type of activity when it is far from that. It is a necessary, good, loving and nurturing activity accomplished with as much discretion as possible. Other people appreciate that and will see it. Breast feeding Moms take action and enjoy the challenge.

I think the paragraph contents/information below this photo is letting me know that breastfeeding advocates don't understand what the "offending point" is in publicly breast feeding your infant. I am disappointed in what your are saying here.

Regarding comments about us being mammals and female mammals feeding their young, human females are the only mammals who's breasts remain enlarged when not breast feeding offspring. Therefore, breasts are inherently sexual for humans, regardless of the context in which they are used.
Breast feed in public, doesn't offend me in the least, but do be prepared for gawkers if you aren't descrete. The gawkers are doing something as natural as you are, following what their natures tell them to do. -

I LOVE this! I have no problem with nursing in public whatsoever; I am proud to nurse in public. Why be ashamed of doing something healthy & natural for your baby? This hat is hilarious; the funniest part of people being so uncomfortable with public breastfeeding is what you see when you see a nursing mom & baby: the baby's head. That's it. It's not a peep show!

I understand completely Kristi. I personally dont want to see someone else's stuff and when they try to not "show it off" I am happy. Breast are normal and so is breastfeeding. Screw not going out if you dont have a kid. Everyone has the right to go out. Just because you breast feed doesnt mean that you had to hide away. That is not fair. I do appreciate the stores and malls that have a nursing room for all those mama's :)

This is perfect. For people who are offended, stop looking. Turn away. I'm offended by Jersey Shore so I don't watch it. I live in Ontario where it is legal for a woman to be topless.

its available in light, medium, and dark tones with pink or brown nipples. and to loretta: asking a woman to cover up is one thing. but people dont just ask that. other people go far enough to tell women they much feed their child in a bathroom or a car, hidden away, or (as someone suggested in the comment 'to compromise') dont leave your house if you have a baby. it may be fine for you to see a mom breastfeeding as long as she uses a blanket. but this is not the case in all people. there are still plenty who think that even that is horrible. plus, it is not a simple thing to juggle a squirming, fussy infant, trying to get them to calm down and latch on, all while making sure a blanket doesnt fall off.

Loretta | 02/07/2012 flag |
I dont have a problem with breastfeeding in public, but I do think that the breast feeding moms need to have respect for the other people around them and not whip out their boob for the world to see. We make stuff so we can "discreetly" breast feeding. Why is there such an issue with covering up your breast so the whole world doesn't have to see them? Its because most breast feeding moms are rude and dont care and think that just because they are feeding a baby that the rest of us want to see it to. Have respect for the people you are around.

what amazes me is that people in a restaurant are offended and downright disgusted by a mom breastfeeding her newborn, but all you have to do is look over about two tables and see women with everything hanging out, but shes not considered 'nude' because her nipples are covered. i dont see any campaign, or even a raised eyebrow, when they go to the beach and see women in string bikinis...

Bonni | 02/07/2012 flag |
Voice of logic... Are you really comparing breast feeding to sex? This is exactly why there is so much of problem with breast feeding, to many ignorant people like you. Did you know that we (humans) are ANIMALS? Really, did you know that? We are called "Mammals"!! Mammals nurse their young with the part of anatomy called "Breasts" which have a thing called "Mammary Glands". We supply a highly nutritious milk for our young. Look it up, you might find it interesting. We are animals and people like you just seem to not want to admit it. Do Monkeys try to cover it up with a leaf? Do elephants go behind a tree? Does any other species try to hide when they are feeding their young just for the sake of not wanting others to see their breasts? Could you imagine how humiliated dairy cows would feel every time they got milked, if they thought like you? It's the process of life, get used to it or go away.

Whats the matter with breast feeding in public AND doing it discreetly? There are ways to do it 5 feet in front of someone with a newborn, they be talking to you and never know. Why be "all out there in your face with yours and baby's rights" when there is a middle ground. Most of us adults have sex. That doesn't mean we do it wherever we want to include groping and tonguing. Yeah, breastfeeding shouldn't be shot down and scoffed. But again, when a breast feeding mom can do it in a manner where this staring at you have no clue, why be in others faces? Maybe baby shouldn't feed in a bathroom but maybe you shouldn't be out in public with a little one or maybe you can chose a middle ground ....

I would describe your disgust at breastfeeding as social grossness and stupidity. You have no idea what it's like to have to go hide to feed your baby. Do you think your body is gross? Are your breasts disgusting? I hope you don't make the whole rest of the public vomit by possibly baring cleavage.

Really???? Public display of grossness? I wouldnt describe my baby drinkin milk as grossness... Is your eating in public groseness too? She has as every right to eat when shes hungry as you and i do....
-
Melissa | 02/06/2012 flag |
I publicly breastfed my child and am not ashamed. If anyone expects me to feed my child in a restroom, they ought to eat in there also. Breastfeeding is natural, that's why women have breasts. If you're disgusted by it, put a blanket over your head.
-
Keri2322 | 02/06/2012 flag |
Cool idea! I'm still disgusted by public breastfeeding though. If you're gonna do it, throw a blanket over the public display of grossness and problem solved. Then again, I'd much rather see that than muffin tops.

Hahaha.. genius! I used to be very uncomfortable seeing public breastfeeding. Then I heard a man in a restaurant explain to his own wife that she should go into the bathroom to feed the baby so no one had to watch her... it hit me that I had succumbed to faux-shame cultural brainwashing and it forever changed my view. Hooray for boobies and boobie beanies!!
