The salespeople behind this one-penny discount must assume no one will read what the original price was. Sadly, this method probably works. In fact, we already ordered the pre-paid phone before we noticed.
UPDATE 3/23/11: Thanks to Dan W. for sending us this gem he found at J.C. Penney, making the above discount of a cent seem wildly generous.

UPDATE 3/24/11: Joanna S. has managed to trump everyone with this photo of a Walmart discount that actually involves a price increase. Thanks for the pic!

UPDATE (5/17/11): For a limited time, you can get nothing off a few things or a discount of a 23% price increase. (Via wr3n)

My workmate just showed me a promotion label that had 84p crossed out, with a big "Now 84p" in the middle. She didn't bother putting it on the shelf :)

The thing about the first one with a 1 penny discount, is that it is from Australia where we don't even have pennies.... So essentially it would cost exactly the same due to rounding...

My dad died last year. I needed to get home for the funeral, a cross country trip. Delta wanted $600.00 for a regular coach flight, and $750 for a "bereavement" flight. I kept telling the agent on the phone that this was not a discount. He kept saying, "Yes, it is." I asked him how charging me $150.00 more was a discount. He said, "Because that's how we discount things." I flew United.

Having worked at JCPenney for more than a year, I saw that happen all the time!!! Or stuff would go on clearance and be on a specially marked clearance rack, but the price was actually $2-3 higher than it was when it was just on a regular sale...

Working in retail, I'd say that probably does work. Usually people think any sign you have up means it's on sale, half the time they don't even read it. It might say something like "This aisle subject to surveillance" And when they bring it up to the register they will say, "there was a sign, isn't this on sale??"
My favorite ever was when my manager had used post-it notes to remind us where we were moving things around and a woman thought a freakin post-it with a pencil scribble was a sale sign! -

Why is everything always "photoshopped"? People do make mistakes by creating signs like this.
