And yet there is so much bitching about how people should be speaking English in the U.S., first of all how about we learn how to spell these simple words we want others to speak, or at least take the time to educate yourself. =p Baby steps people, baby steps.

  • Krysten | 04/20/2012 flag  |

I hate how so many people don't know how to spell!

  • Ashley | 04/05/2012 flag  |

omg this is so funny i'm going to show it to all of my friends http://www.breakingdawntickets.com/

  • Christen1287352 | 03/27/2012 flag  |

LOL! These made me laugh :).

  • Jenny | 03/20/2012 flag  |

No matter how many of these you post, no one ever corrects women when the writer actually meant "woman." I'm not sure people even realize there's a difference anymore.

The one with the gay comment is obviously Gabby Sidibe (Precious). It might be a fake but you cannot hide the fact that the person pictured is Gabby.

Thank you, justa trollster and Anne. These comments used to be fun, before this spam bullshit started.

  • Anne | 01/15/2012 flag  |

    @ justa trollster

Who knows if anybody pays attention but I'll do whatever to stop spam. We don't even know if there IS an "Enterprise Finance Guarantee" or if it is just some con artist from Nigeria!

  • justa trollster | 01/15/2012 flag  |

thank you Anne--good to know! i didn't know what the hell that flag tab was for, even after i searched all around this site trying to find out. i didn't want to hit it and then find i was subscribed to something lol. Now i will just flag away!!

  • Anne | 01/14/2012 flag  |

    @ ihatespammers

I also hate the spam messages and have begun flagging each one. If we just complain among ourselves -- and don't flag the spam for the attention of the people who manage this site -- then it is just going to go on.

Looks like the spam police finally snagged these dumbass "spell" idiots, and disabled their frakking ads! YEA!!!

Here's one from my facebook homepage that I found: http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff91/InkHeart17/forthefacebookmisspellingssite.jpg

I hear ya Alys! These dumbasses should be heavily fined in spam court, at the very least. Notice how they're all virtually illiterate too? They are an insult to all! buncha maroons...

  • Alys | 01/12/2012 flag  |

These spell-bots are getting on my nerves. I get a nice little notification in my inbox that says, 'Hey! Someone else commented on this post!' and I go hoping to find justa trollster or someone of note who's posted some more idiot-bashing. Nope. Just a bunch of spell-trolls.

As a Wiccan, I'm insulted. As a troll, I'm delighted. These two things should never collide -- not in my universe.

  • RJ | 01/07/2012 flag  |

Oh he11. Just the first, not the second. Too tired to correct myself! Good night...

  • RJ | 01/07/2012 flag  |

Ha - and you're right, should read: Also, I must say that... -or- I must say also, that... (Still can't just ditch the comma.) JB

  • RJ | 01/07/2012 flag  |

Um. I still don't know about those deeply sensitive beings with big hearts who blanch at linguistic crimes... Sure hope they aren't language teachers! :D

  • RJ | 01/07/2012 flag  |

@bubka42: Apparently my page wasn't updating, so I hadn't seen your responses regarding okay. It was you challenging my use of "ok" with "okay," not the other way around, if you recall. I didn't say that okay was not ok! My dictionary (American Heritage) lists OKAY, OK, and O.K. as all being acceptable. So yes, I still maintain that all three forms are interchangeable and correct. The etymologies (I should have cited) are both from Wiktionary, which corroborates what I found at Wikipedia -only way more concise.
That first link of yours seems to be an argument in which one party is claiming that the OED is racially biased? That's a new one to me...
Oh well, it is likely to remain another one of those words that we never will be able to prove the origins of, beyond any doubt. Personally, I fancy the Latin one: Initials of Omnis Korrecta ("all correct") Just because. :)

  • bubka42 | 01/06/2012 flag  |

Oh, but I wasn't talking of you and me when I said 'we'. I was talking about those deeply sensitive beings with big hearts who blanch at linguistic crimes.

There was some bitterness in some of the exchanges with pixy. Mostly from her side I think. I was merely referring to them.

'Watchful about' is in usage, though, again, 'watchful of' probably sounds better. I need some serious brushing up.

Your other correction, though, taken in the context, was plain hilarious. :D

By the way, that comma after 'I must say also' seems uninvited to me. Just saying...

  • RJ | 01/06/2012 flag  |

Oh, and I do not pale (i.e. blanch) when I witness linguistic errors! (Although I may flinch a little, lol.)

  • RJ | 01/06/2012 flag  |

I must say also, that I'm confused by your notion that "It takes a big heart in a deeply sensitive being to be watchful about one's spelling and grammar."
Speaking for myself, I am just plain irked by how our language is butchered these days.
Likewise, I fail to see the "bitterness" you seem to detect here. Perhaps the occasional drama queen or self-appointed pc cop, but for the most part just good entertainment and welcome laughter.
Lastly, what's with all this "we" stuff? Was I absent the day you were elected spokesman?

...be watchful *of one's spelling and grammar.

...we blanch when we see the language being *sullied...

  • bubka42 | 01/06/2012 flag  |

@RJ: Regarding your grammatical suggestions, I accept 'by your ear' as sloppy. It's not a phrase in parlance much in my circles. As for the other two, you know they don't make sense. 'About the spelling' and 'about spelling' are semantic variants of the same idea - one treats 'spelling' as a noun; the other, a gerund. Similarly, since 'to spell' can be both transitive and intransitive, the other complaint doesn't hold water either.

Having said that, I accept that, stylistically, your way of putting them sounds slightly smoother than mine.

  • bubka42 | 01/06/2012 flag  |

    @RJ: Oh dear.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_proposed_etymologies_of_OK
I think, after that, we should drop that debate on the etymology of Okay. :-) Neither of us knew much about it apparently. Nevertheless, what I claimed still holds: the currently accepted for is Okay. You can't possibly deny that.

  • bubka42 | 01/06/2012 flag  |

@RJ: Okay is a descendant of O.K. (which, by the way, has military origins, if I remember correctly - but I grant the possibility nevertheless that I do not), agreed. That doesn't make OK anymore acceptable a substitute for Okay than, say, seely is for silly, or broucor for broker. You can't replace a word by its etymological ancestor.

And this link I just found looks interesting:
    http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?EtymologyOfOkay

  • RJ | 01/06/2012 flag  |

    @bubka42:
    OKAY
    Etymology
    A respelling of OK.
    OK
    Etymology
Abbreviated fanciful spelling of "all correct" (oll korrect), as part of a fad for similar comical abbreviations (of which no others have survived) in the United States in the late 1830s.

  • RJ | 01/06/2012 flag  |

@bubka42: So let me get this straight. The way you see it, it's alright to be "less careful" (translation: lazy) about spelling in one's mother tongue, because we learn to speak it, of course, before we learn to write?
Odd little theory, that. I, for one, most certainly would neither "expect," nor accept, that as a valid excuse for poor spelling and sloppy grammar.

*at spelling than... (minus: stuff out)

because you learn your mother tongue more by (minus: your) ear, and thus you're less careful about (minus: the) spelling.

  • justa trollster | 01/06/2012 flag  |

    thank you alys - yummy!

  • bubka42 | 01/06/2012 flag  |

    @RJ: *okay

@pixysparrow: We appreciate your concern, but you must understand that no one is being mean here. Not at all. It takes a big heart in a deeply sensitive being to be watchful about one's spelling and grammar. I mean, we blanch when we see the language being bullied - how can we even think of bullying people? Seriously, get over it. I don't like all the bitterness (or vitriol, as Alys would put it) in the atmosphere. A happy new year to you too. Let's make this a happy place, 'kay?

  • Alys | 01/06/2012 flag  |

Oh, I didn't miss the bigot. I was just trying to let her preserve a LITTLE dignity. Oh, and to leave stuff for you guys.

And here, justa trollster. -gives cake- Stolen pity-party cake is just oh-so-satisfying.

  • bubka42 | 01/06/2012 flag  |

    @jenni: *bigots
@alys: how did YOU miss that? :-)

In general, though, I don't see why Americans are supposed to be better in spelling stuff out than people for whom it's not the mother tongue. The way I see it, it should be the other way round, because you learn your mother tongue more by your ear, and thus you're less careful about the spelling. For example, I spell way more accurately in English than in Bengali, my mother tongue, which nevertheless I speak more fluently. Isn't that the way you would expect things to be?

  • justa trollster | 01/05/2012 flag  |

what is wrong with these twits trying to advertise their bogus "spell" sites on here? why isn't there any way to report them for spamming??

  • justa trollster | 01/05/2012 flag  |

lol--perfect alys! can i come with? you can come visit my bridge for coffee anytime :)

  • Judy Harders | 01/05/2012 flag  |

I am such a terrible typist I wouldn't dare bust someone else's spelling.

  • Alys | 01/05/2012 flag  |

I'm saying I'm going to crash it, eat the cake, and then leave with her presents. It's what trolls do, after all.

  • justa trollster | 01/05/2012 flag  |

so alys, are you saying you do, or do not, want an invite to birdbrain's self-pity party?

  • Alys | 01/04/2012 flag  |

Pixysparrow, by responding, you feed the people you wish to repel. But continue on; I like being fed.

And I myself am a victim of bullying. But that's not the be all and end all, and anyone who defends people they do not know from people they do not know is BEGGING for a troll to high five them in the face. Verbally, of course.

These comments are just as amusing as the posts. Troll on, Happy Placers!

  • RJ | 12/31/2011 flag  |

Since it is the holiday season, I would wish for you two things:
A sense of humor and a thicker skin. When you learn to laugh at yourself, it's a little easier to laugh at everything. It's ok to laugh in life without censoring the humor.

  • RJ | 12/31/2011 flag  |

@pixysparrow, Public Service Announcement? Wow. Get over yourself dude. Really, the lady doth protest too much! By the way, why ARE you here? This whole site IS for fun and games. Go volunteer somewhere; rescue a pet from a shelter; find a constructive outlet where you can be a do-gooder who really does some good! G'day.

  • pixysparrow | 12/31/2011 flag  |

Where's the "outraged self-righteous indignation" RJ? I was merely calling out the obvious bullying tone of this website. I was only asking those who participate in spreading negativity to stop for a minute and think of how their actions and words might affect others. Just a public service announcement ;) But I seemed to have hit a nerve...you are so defensive. As a survivor of bullying, I know that sometimes, all it takes for a victim to "snap" (aka major psychological damage) is a wee little comment pointed in a mean direction. You don't know what people have lived through, or what they are experiencing this very moment. By participating in a forum that spreads negativity and potentially hurtful comments, you could be the person to potentially push someone over the edge. This is not fun and games; psyches and lives are at stake here. Bullying causes psychological scars, and can irreversibly change the course of one's future. Just think about it ;) Anyways, Happy New Year peeps! All the best to you and yours in 2012. *~pixysparrow~*

  • John | 12/30/2011 flag  |

@Alys You make a good point...it's hard to resist the most basic urges, haha.

  • Alys | 12/30/2011 flag  |

Wow, it seems like half of the Internet is masochistic. We keep arguing in circles and circles and circles about who is being cruel and who is not, but it's just giving trolls (like shameless, shameless me) more fuel.

And @John: These days, it's less a disregard of personal morality than the basic human desire to show superiority - in these cases, of basic linguistic faculties.

@Everyone Else: Thank you for endless (if occasionally excruciating) amusement. Feel free to check this for typos.

  • John | 12/27/2011 flag  |

Oh man...some of these are hilarious. On the other hand, the vast majority of them, even--perhaps especially--the funny ones are rather cruel. The odd jab here and there can be an amusing way to correct someone and teach them a lesson in communication, but incessant abuse just shows that professional ethics are more important to you than personal morality...which isn't anything to be proud of.

  • Anne | 12/27/2011 flag  |

    @ Alys, Jenni, et al.

Sorry for the typo -- yes, I know that "Americans" is not spelled with two "e"s.

  • Anne | 12/27/2011 flag  |

    @ Eva

This thread is NOT the place to try to sell the rest of us whatever snake oil potion you are peddling. Yes, I can see it in the cards -- it won't be long before you'll tell us how much it is and how we can order it for ourselves.

  • Anne | 12/27/2011 flag  |

    @ Alys

If Jenni is truly fluent in three languages (and didn't just study them in high school) then I applaud her linguistic talents. Alas, she used English to brag about herself and say disparaging things about the rest of us hapless Ameericans. Anybody who does that in this country is just asking to clobbered for it and I was glad to oblige.

  • RJ | 12/27/2011 flag  |

Eva/Denise, go to your room! You too Pedel. This board is about spelling, not spells lol. These comments are just as entertaining as the posts themselves. To the wordsmiths here, who "get" it, I offer my applause. To the bleeding hearts, for crying out loud (pun intended) there are far better venues than this for you to spew your treacle! Why waste your outraged self-righteous indignation here? I mean really pixysparrow? "...major psychological damage..."? And Jenni, I simply cannot resist pointing out that it is *bigot, and wonder how the auto spell-check on here did not catch that... And now I wish to quote what I recently saw on a T-shirt: "Bad spelers of the world UNTIE!"

  • Wow, This is harsh. | 12/21/2011 flag  |

I accidentally found this page when I was searching the proper spelling of a word. This place is called "Happy Place?" Yikes! Does it make you feel good to make fun of people who cannot spell correctly? People need to be constructively corrected, not taunted, in order to learn fundamental communication skills such as reading, writing, speaking, and spelling. You are essentially abusing the individual who made the spelling/grammatical error(s); your hurtful comments will inflict major psychological damage upon them, and that is not cool. Try a little kindness in place of obnoxiousness. You just might like where a change of heart will take you...
    Sincerely,
    *~pixysparrrow~*
