Some people say Americans' love of suing the crap out of each other is a bad thing, but if it wasn't for that litigious spirit our warning signs and product disclaimers would be far less entertaining. No matter how ridiculous they may seem, remember that at some point in time, someone did something to make each of these signs necessary.

You are over analyzing this.

If the sign say 'Not In Use', it IS in use, because it is telling you that it is not in use. In which case it is wrong, because it is in use. So it isn't in use. Returning to the original statement, that is correct. Which means it's wrong.
Am I over anyalysing this? You can tell me. -

The "high chairs are not to be turned upside down" just needs a little more info. Folks do that because it makes a good stand for baby carriers. Many restaurants actually recommend it, but apparently this one doesn't.

The ? sign is pointing the direction to an information center where your questions can be answered.

The one with the falling rocks and falling cow is real; it (or one very much like it) is on CA-178 in the middle of the Kern River Canyon outside of Bakersfield, CA; it's a narrow canyon, and cattle graze on the hills, and have been known to tumble down splat to the roadway or into the river.

I've heard of high chairs that when turned upside down or sideways turn into table, but none that turn into car seats.

Well, the Drugs only, no food sign is actually common. Drugs and food cannot be stored in the same refrigerator, so those are used to clearly indicate which fridge is which. Helps when the inspectors come around, they like to see you've taken measures to comply with the rules and prevent accidental contamination. There are also food only, no drugs magnets for the food fridge.

The washing feet in the sink is from a Muslim school. The ritually bathe their feet daily, We had a school in Minneapolis that installed special foot wash stations so they didn't have to use the hand sinks.

The one about ironing is pretty tough going. I always wear a shirt while I am ironing, does this sign mean that people should only do their ironing when topless?

Love the sign of the person feeding a baby to a crocodile -- what is the sign supposed to mean? Please feed your baby to the crocodiles? Surely it should be a sign with line through it to say don't feed babies to crocodiles?

The "Do Not Lick Fence" sign comes courtesy of the sign crew at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in Hillsdale, NY.
It was later joined by a "Lick the folking fence!" sign as seen here:

The "Do Not Use While Sleeping" on the hair dryer may be semi-legitimate, as the old school base hair dryers double as bed warmers.

The "no right turn for ten miles except..." sign is on the A31 westbound in the New Forest in Hampshire. The next right turn in the A338 to Salisbury, in between there is little but heathland, sheep and wild ponies. significantly, this sign is placed after the previous right turn so any value of the warning is pointless anyway, unless you want to visit the Rufus Stone, which is made of cast iron. Who said the English were logical?

tahrey | 09/06/2011 flag |
There's a few photoshops in here... hell I might even be responsible for one of them, I'm not sure. But they are kinda obvious.
The "no right turn next 10m" one is, however real. It's from here in the little ole United Kingdom where we drive on the left, have councils that have carried out quite a lot of "gap closures" in the middle of our higher-speed divided highways of late, and haven't quite figured out yet that when we write "miles", we should do it either with a capital M, or at least as "mi" to differentiate from the random mixing of "yards" (yds) and "metres" (m) on other signs dealing with shorter distances.
Just one amongst the good number of unintentionally weird roadsigns we have... Strangely, no-one posted the "Secret Nuclear Bunker" one this time round. -

Very funny. I actually laughed out loud more than once. I designed signs for 20 years so maybe that makes them funnier to me.
